MATH INSTRUCTION: Beginning with our assessment, we create a learning plan based on grade level standards. We focus heavily on teaching math fact fluency using our system Strategic Arithmetic™; a concept that is so important in the early grades. To do this, we teach the facts in a very specific order using "tricks," to enforce recall without counting on fingers and toes! When the child has mastered the math fact, the "trick" is no longer needed. We also work on current school content, while filling-in any gaps in knowledge. We have heard your concerns about common core, and want you to know that we have you covered. We use multiple methods of solving each problem, which in turn leads to a higher level of understanding. We work on the strategies for how to break down word problems in every session. Instruction of new concepts is based on whichever math curriculum your child is working from in school. We preview upcoming concepts, and do test review for exams. What makes our program different is the blend between helping your child understand and feel confident about their current school work, and providing our own curriculum to satisfy additional needs. Our math program is just what your child needs to build up their confidence!
READING INSTRUCTION: Our reading program is intended to improve fluency across all standards. Meaning, we work on the underlying reason why your child has fallen behind and losing their confidence. One thing to keep in mind about reading is that it is the hardest thing your child will do in their adolescent years. Our language has 26 letters, 44 sounds (phonemes), and over 1,100 ways to represent those sounds! Talk about a challenge. We begin our journey together with our assessment, which targets your child's issues, providing feedback on phonics knowledge, sight words, multi-syllable word decoding, vocabulary, comprehension, and speed. A typical reading session will be split into the specific focus areas for your child in order to provide the maximum impact. With early readers emphasis is usually placed on phonics and sight words. With more progressed readers, on decoding, and comprehension. "Homework" is sent home every week for reinforcement of concepts. Since we hone in on the missing link, students often progress rapidly in their reading level. Most only require one session a week and some at home practice!
WRITING INSTRUCTION: Writing is truly an art, and as us adults know, requires lots of practice. Some of our students work on writing during their reading session, but others may want to come for only writing instruction. During writing we work on grammar, spelling, format, styles of writing, and punctuation. If you are concerned about your child's writing and reading, chances are the writing is being effected by the reading fluency. Therefore, the reading would be the main focus before the writing.
STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES OR ATTENTION DISORDERS: Our program works well for children with all types of learning disabilities and attention disorders. Our instruction is based in strategy instruction. This form of teaching is proven to be what children across abilities need to make lasting progress. We keep it very multi-sensory, with movement, games, and lots of hands on learning. We also understand that every child requires different modalities to learn. It is becoming more common for children to need the one-on-one instruction to make progress in their studies. We always check in with you every week about progress, and if we feel the student is not making the progress that they should be, we will either make an adjustment to the current plan, or help you figure out next steps (we will not let you waste your time and money.)
